The Diplomat, the premier international current-affairs magazine for the Asia-Pacific, is looking to add to our roster of regular, paid writers. We have positions open covering two separate areas: Central Asia and Asia Life.

The Diplomat seeks a regular, paid writer to cover Central Asia for the Crossroads Asia section.

The writer will be responsible for writing one short article a week for The Diplomat, around 600-800 words in length, on developments in the countries of Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan). Preferably, the writer will focus on domestic developments in the region’s countries — including politics, economics, and society. Candidates who have regional experience are strongly preferred.

Desired qualities:

  • Previous experience either writing for online or print publications on Central Asia or study focused on the region.
  • Extensive, demonstrable knowledge of Central Asia.
  • A strong command of the English language (Central Asian languages and/or Russian a plus).

Asia Life

The Diplomat seeks a regular, paid writer to cover popular culture in Northeast Asia for the Asia Life section.

The writer will be responsible for writing two short articles per month for The Diplomat, around 600-800 words in length, on popular culture — movies, music, sports — with a focus on the countries of Northeast Asia (China, the Koreas, Japan). The writer must be excited to share Asia’s culture with our global audience, explaining blockbuster movies and pop phenomena with nuance and sensitivity. Candidates based in the region are strongly preferred.

Desired qualities:

  • Previous experience either writing for online or print publications on Asia and culture.
  • Extensive, demonstrable knowledge of Northeast Asia.
  • A strong command of the English language (Knowledge of one or more regional languages a plus).
