Sony Xperia Honami Likely to Boast an S4-Crushing 20MP Camera

Alleged camera sample adds credibility to previously leaked specs and photos.

Earlier today, TechKiddy posted a camera sample allegedly taken by the upcoming Sony Xperia Honami’s 20MP camera. On its own, the sample may not be particularly inspiring – but the camera details match up with two previous leaks that claimed the same 20MP sensor would be included in Sony’s Xperia Z follow-up.

While nowhere near the frivolous 41MP PureView sensor found on the Nokia Lumia 1020, the purported 20MP Honami would almost certainly defeat the Samsung Galaxy Zoom’s 16 megapixels and the flagship S4’s 13 megapixels.

The photo sample, which is of a bicycle, was posted by someone named Taylor Li. Photo details reveal that the snap was taken with a device called “C6902,” which AndroidAuthority claims to be a model number for the Sony Xperia Honami.

“The picture was taken on August 10 … with a C6902 device whose camera is made by Sony and has a resolution of 5248 x 3936 (or 20.65-megapixel), a 4:3 aspect ratio and f/2.0 aperture,” AndroidAuthority stated. The camera supposedly features both a Sony G lens and a BIONZ image processing engine.

The specs revealed in Li’s camera sample match up perfectly with leaked photos from earlier this month. Vietnamese site Tinhte posted front and back photos of what is said to be a functioning Honami handset. The rear photo has the Sony G lens logo next to the lens, with “XX.XMP” below. However, a front-side shot reveals an on-screen menu that confirms 20MP at 5248 x 3936 (4:3).

Engadget also claimed to have found a spec sheet for the Honami, via Taiwanese website ePrice, last month.

ePrice says the device has a 20.7-megapixel ExmorRS sensor that's the same size as the one in the Galaxy Camera and other point-and-shoots. It's also paired with a Sony G lens,” Engadget reported. “The Lumia 1020 and GS4 Zoom might have to face some serious competition.”

Other components listed on the spec sheet include a 5-inch 1080p “Triluminous” display with X-Reality, a Snapdragon 800 CPU rated at 2.2GHz, 2GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage with a microSD slot, and a large 3000 mAh battery with “Stamina Mode.”

Photos of a Honami mockup show a device that looks very similar to the current Xperia Z – with a glass back and a slim profile. The main difference is the inclusion of a physical camera button and a large speaker grille at the bottom.

The Sony Xperia Honami, which is also called the i1, is expected to be shown off at the IFA conference in Berlin. Sony sent invitations to the press for its own “exclusive booth unveiling” at the show, scheduled for September 4.
