An ongoing investigation into Alice Guo, the mayor of a small city in Luzon, has prompted increased scrutiny of online gambling operations – and their possible links to Chinese espionage.

Old debates about U.S. engagement have become obsolete in light of evidence that the country's elite is abetting cyberscam operations on a massive scale.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission says that connections supplying Shwe Kokko, a center of online fraud operations in Myanmar's Kayin State, were illegal.

The workers, who came from 18 different countries, were allegedly duped into working for fraudulent online gaming sites and other cybercrime groups.

The 19 were taken into custody in the southern city of Sihanoukville on January 24.
