Today, the rise in China’s capabilities as well as aspects of Beijing’s behavior – from its reaction to the Hong Kong protests to its coercion in the South China Sea – continues to attract headlines across the world. China’s long regional shadow has important implications for the future evolution of Asia’s politics, economics, and security.

To discuss these issues and more, Luke Hunt recently spoke to Huw Watkin, founder of the consultancy Drakon Associates. Watkin has spent about a quarter century covering China, Southeast Asia and beyond. The two spoke about trying to understand Chinese intentions for the region and Asia’s future.
